Parramatta Eels sign young New Zealand cross-code convert

Continuing to build for the future, theย Parramatta Eelsย have signed a talented young cross-code convert fromย New Zealandย after he decided to switch codes from rugby union.

Following in the footsteps ofย Harry Inchย (Warriors) andย Saumaki Saumakiย (Rabbitohs),ย Zero Tackleย understands that Dru Faletolu has become the latestย New Zealandย schoolboy to sign with anย NRLย club, joining theย Parramatta Eels.

Still only young, he will appear for the club’s Under-19sย SG Ball Cupย team as they look to go one better in 2026 after losing to theย Sydney Roostersย in this year’s grand final.

A former Under-15s Super Rugby representative for the Melbourne Rebels, Faletolu also spent time in the Hurricanes Under-18s regional development squad earlier this year and comes from the famed Wellington College inย New Zealand.

Becoming the latestย New Zealandย rugby union prospect to sign with anย NRLย club, the signing of Faletolu comes as theย New Zealandย Rugby (NZR) body are currently in a fight to protect the nation’s best schoolboys from defecting toย NRLย teams.

โ€œThey [league clubs] unashamedly target rugby union development systems because they think they are so good,โ€ Crusaders boss Colin Mansbridge toldย Stuff.

โ€œThere’s a lot of opportunities for young men and women now. And I think that other code does a very good job of relying on rugby union to be its development pathway.

“They don’t do any of it themselves, they’re really lazy in that area.โ€
