Former Celtic manager Wilfried Nancy is reportedly considering a swift return to management following his short and unsuccessful spell at Parkhead.
The Frenchman was appointed in December but was dismissed earlier this month after a difficult run of results that produced just two wins from eight matches. The brief stint proved disastrous, with performances and results failing to meet expectations and leaving his tenure among the most disappointing in the club’s modern history.
Despite the setback, Nancy is keen to get back into work. Reports from French outlets Actu and Envertetcontretous suggest his name has been put forward for a potential role at Saint-Étienne.
The Ligue 2 side already have a manager in place in Erik Horneland, but pressure is mounting following a recent defeat to Reims that left Saint-Étienne sitting fifth in the table and battling to keep their promotion hopes alive.
In the aftermath of Nancy’s departure from Celtic, captain Callum McGregor offered an honest assessment of what went wrong, pointing to drastic changes in the team’s playing style as a major factor.
“I think it was too much, too soon in terms of change,” McGregor said. “You go from a team that’s been super aggressive and on the front foot for 10-plus years, pretty much the whole time I’ve been here.
“You’re used to playing and defending a certain way, and then you bring in a completely different approach, along with the nuance of understanding the league and playing in Scotland.”
McGregor also suggested that abandoning Celtic’s traditional high press and aggressive approach contributed to the defensive struggles that followed.
“For me, it was just a little bit too much, too soon,” he added. “It was a big change from where the team had been.”
The demanding schedule only compounded the problem.
“It was a really tough situation coming in with games every three days,” McGregor explained. “You’re almost learning in the game, which is probably the harshest environment you can have.”
As results worsened, confidence across the squad suffered.
“When you lose confidence, players and everyone around the club start to struggle,” McGregor said. “You need belief in yourself, and when you’re losing games that belief does waver. We’re human beings, it affects you.”
Despite the disappointment, McGregor stressed the importance of moving on.
“It’s really unfortunate that it didn’t work out, but we need to draw a line under it now,” he said. “There’s been a lot of negativity this season, but there’s also a lot to be positive about. The players have drawn a line under it.”
Now 48, Nancy will be eager to restore his reputation after enjoying significant success in MLS with CF Montréal and the Columbus Crew prior to his move to Celtic.
Whether a return to European management with Saint-Étienne materialises remains to be seen, but with his name back in circulation, speculation is set to continue as he looks for a chance to rebuild his standing in the game.
