Celtic’s recent seasons have been defined by big decisions behind the scenes, with the club constantly reshaping the squad in search of consistency and long term success.
Some calls have paid off. Others have left fans questioning whether the club has been too quick to move on from certain talents.
At Parkhead, competition is fierce and patience is often limited. Players are expected to deliver immediately, and when that does not happen, the direction can change quickly.
Over the past few months, there has been a growing sense that another talented player has quietly slipped down the pecking order, with his future effectively decided before he ever had a real chance to establish himself.
This was a player who arrived with real promise. Signed for a significant fee and backed to develop into a key figure, there was genuine belief that he could offer something different in midfield.
But things never quite clicked. Minutes were limited, rhythm was hard to find, and just when it looked like he might get a run in the side, circumstances would shift again.
What many did not see was the struggle happening behind the scenes. The midfielder was dealing with a rare physical condition affecting his calves, something he described as leaving him feeling “half paralysed” at times. It was a serious issue that disrupted his development and made it difficult to build any momentum.
Despite that, he kept pushing. Treatment became part of his routine, including botox injections just to manage the condition and stay available. It was a battle that went largely unnoticed, but one that shaped his entire time at the club.
A loan move to Los Angeles was meant to change everything. Instead, it only reinforced the feeling that his time at Celtic was slipping away. Game time remained scarce, and when he returned, the situation had not improved.

Behind closed doors, the message had become clear. He was no longer part of the plans going forward. Whether due to form, fitness concerns, or the need for a squad reset, the decision was made. The club hierarchy, led by Dermot Desmond, had effectively moved on, leaving the player to find a new path elsewhere.
That path has now taken him back to familiar ground. Odin Thiago Holm has completed a loan move to Vålerenga, the club where his career first took off. For him, it is not just another transfer. It is a chance to rebuild, away from the pressure and uncertainty that surrounded him in Glasgow.
“It feels really good to be in place. It’s taken a long time, but now we’re here on deadline day, and everything is secure. The last couple of years have been tough, and there have been a lot of things that have been out of my control, but I know the people here and they know me and my body. I felt it was very right to come back here and try to get a restart on my career again.”
Those words reflect both frustration and relief. Frustration at how things unfolded, and relief at finally having a clear direction again.
Back in Norway, there is belief that the player Celtic once invested in is still there, waiting to be rediscovered.
“Initially, Odin will be on loan until the end of the season. He has had a few troubled years with injuries, but has been completely healthy since January. We all know what qualities a healthy Odin Thiago Holm has, and we are looking forward to having him back home. I think this is an excellent solution for all parties.”
The welcome has been warm, and the opportunity is real.
“Vålerenga and Celtic FC have agreed a loan deal for Odin Thiago Holm. The midfielder was sold to the Scottish giants ahead of the 2023 season, but is now back in royal blue and will play for Vålerenga until 2026.
“The main character himself landed at Gardermoen on Tuesday afternoon, and is extremely happy to be back at the club he spent five seasons with. The number 15 shirt is hanging in its place in the locker room. Thiago Holm has been injury-free since the New Year and feels in good shape. Now he is looking forward to wearing the royal blue jersey with number 15 again.”
For Celtic, it is another decision in a long list of squad changes. For the player, it feels more personal.
He arrived with expectations, battled through challenges that few fully understood, and leaves knowing that his time at Parkhead never truly got the chance to unfold the way it should have.
Now, away from the spotlight, he has one clear objective. Prove that the story is not finished yet.
